How Data Back Up With An
External Hard Drive Saved Me

I (almost) learned the hard way about the importance of data back up in March 2006.

My 2 year old laptop computer started showing a bit of trouble in February but I didn’t think much of it.

In March, the hard drive died. Completely.

I took it in for repairs and was told that I needed to get a new hard drive because the old one was dead.

All my files, all the pictures my wife and I had saved to our computer (including our wedding pictures!) all my emails, everything was gone.

Well, not really...

Fortunately, the previous summer I had purchased an external hard drive to back up my computer's data.

Essentially an external hard drive is a device that I plug into my computer and use to back up all data on my computer.

The external drive saves everything on my computer onto a separate drive for safekeeping. Alternatively I can choose exactly what files I want saved to the external drive but in general terms it saves every file, every application, every email, every Word document and everything else on my computer onto this external drive.

Because I had used this external drive to back up all of the data on my computer, I was lucky. I didn’t lose any of my data.

The product I have enables me to hook it up to my new computer and with the touch of a few buttons, instruct the external drive to put all my data on my new computer in the exact same place it was stored on my old computer.

Without this external drive, I would have lost everything on my computer.

I know people who have been in this position but fortunately it didn’t happen to me.

As if this wasn’t enough, in June 2006 – less than 4 months after getting a new hard drive – my computer died again, this time for good. I had to buy a new computer and my external hard drive came in handy again!

In this instance, my hard drive didn’t fail – it was the motherboard that died – having the external hard drive allowed me to quickly transfer my data and files onto my new computer.

Here is the data back up product I use that has helped me on two separate occasions in 4 months:
