Tips For Writing Email
That Gets Read

If you've ever received an email from an Internet marketer, you might have received a message that follows a fairly standard format.

With all the emails that people receive in an average day, getting them to open your email is a small victory and your subject line can often be the difference between having your email opened or simply deleted without being opened.

If you're planning on using email marketing as part of your overall Internet marketing strategy here are some suggestions to help you write ones that get read and acted upon.

Use a compelling subject line: A compelling subject line may not guarantee that your email gets read word for word but it can get your email opened which is a great start.

For example, which subject line would make you more likely to open an email:

Email Tips or10 Secrets For Writing An Email That Gets Read

The first subject line is generic, the second one is more specific and intriguing.

The subject line can also be personalized, depending on whose opinion you believe:

Personalize your subject line: If you've ever signed up for a free newsletter or free course on a website, you'll probably be asked for your first name and your email address.

Internet marketers ask for your first name so that they can personalize the subject line of the email they send you and so that they can address you by name – perhaps several times – in the body of the email.

Addressing people by name in the subject line tends to increase the chance that the email gets opened and addressing the person by name in the opening (and even throughout the email) tends to increase the chance the email actually gets read.

With my monthly newsletters and free 5-days courses, I ask my visitors for just their first name and email address so I can personalize the emails they receive. Asking for more information tends to reduce the rate that people sign up so I stick with just asking them for pertinent information.

Some people disagree with using the first name of your readers in the subject line because spammers tend to be good at using this technique so it's up to you as to whether or not you use it in the subject line.

Keep sentences and paragraphs short: Email from Internet marketers tends to be written in a conversational tone with short sentences and paragraphs.

It's not uncommon for a paragraph to be one or two sentences tops.

In this regard, you'll probably see lots of white space and short punchy sentences and paragraphs.

Consider using selected formatting: You'll also probably see some formatting in the email ie. underlining and/or bolding key words and phrases to get your attention.

Be careful about using too much formatting as it could set off Spam filters that prevent your emails from being read.

Use your own voice: When writing your email, remember to keep your readers' attention with interesting text. You want to get your message across but remember that you also need to give your readers a reason to keep reading.

Internet marketers tend to use a conversational tone in their emails by speaking in their own voice and injecting their personality into it where appropriate.

Don’t forget to include the desired action: Remember to clearly tell your reader what you want them to do.

Do you want them to buy something?

Do you need them to check out a URL that you've put together?

Don't forget the goal of your email and ensure that your reader knows what is required of them.

Finally, remember to spell check your emails before they are sent. Nothing turns off a reader more than a poorly written email with typos or grammatical errors.
